Those nice people at Optimum Releasing have sent us the details for the UK DVD release of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and The Cat Returns, both of which are due out on 26th September just in time to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the ground breaking Studio Ghibli and just after the 23rd September release of their brilliant cinema release of Howl's Moving Castle.
Both DVDs have their fair share of extras include storyboards, original Japanese Theatrical trailers, Studio Ghibli trailer reel, the Cat Returns DVD has a making of featurette, while Nausicaa has a birth of Studio Ghibli Featurette. Since both titles are Studio Ghibli titles, they're a must see, but if you're strapped for cash and can only get hold of one, go for Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, since it's truly epic Sci-Fi. Both movies have profiles on fansite Nausicaa.net

It seems that Millennium actress will have Atlantic accents according to reports from Eyeonanime.co.uk. It’s a bit of a shame for fans that were genuinely excited to see a real British dub, but it seems that Manga Entertainment feel that it will be too jarring to hear English voices on a dub.

The UK release of Millenium Actress will contain a dub. Animeton are reporting it will feature a dub using British voice over talent, a rarity for Western anime releases. Neo Magazine also state in their next issue that they will feature an article on dubbing the film.

Planet Tokyo have posted an interesting article called Talking Anime Business Blues, it covers the current concern about the boom on anime in the USA, and the double edge sword that is fansubbing, which both creates a hype for a series and also takes away DVD sales since fans would already have it on fansub (this is a long running debate in anime fandom and most fans operate on the policy that if they have the fansub and like it, they'll buy the DVD, otherwise they'll delete it).

Those nice people at ADV Films have just sent us the details of a new title they've acquired - Samurai Gun, it looks like a interesting mix of Samurai and firearms. It doesn't seem to be for the faint hearted, since their marketing it as "Rurouni Kenshin With A Better Body Count", well Kenshin, was never keen on killing in his later years, since he did use a reverse blade sword after vowing never to kill again, but I digress, it looks like an interesting title and perhaps on to consider. The Otaku News Crew were cracking up at the last line on the trailer.

We've just heard from Optimum Releasing who inform us that there will be no Spirited Away Special Edition as they are "sadly unable to release it due to the difficulty of acquiring new extras".
The Otaku News Crew had heard rumours about Optimum intending to release such a special edition of Spirited Away to tie in with the Cat Returns in June, however we decided not to publish sketchy information, preferring to wait until we could get more solid details. The Special Edition would have been made exclusively for the UK (and perhaps Australia too through Madman Entertainment), it would have not been a reauthored US DVD like many UK anime DVDs.

Here at Otaku News we listen to you, our readers comments and will always try to improve the site based on what we hear. The most common request we've had so far is for a review section. So the Otaku News Crew started to work away, writing reviews and also writing the code for you to navigate the reviews. At the moment we've put up some DVD reviews for you to read, over time we intend to add a lot more. Currently all editions of Otaku News will show all DVDs, regardless of their region. Eventually once we have a substantial number of reviews the UK and US Editions will only display reviews from their region.
We've also adopted a policy of being honest, so far one review already has a rating of 2 out of 10! We hope you find this addition to the site helpful and enjoying reading our opinions, of course if you don't like it and think you can do better, then by all means tell us, we are always looking for talented contributors to write news articles, reviews and anything else of interest to otaku!

The gentle softly spoken people over at ADV Films have sent us the details of their latest DVD release - Elfen Lied, a violent, gruesome anime, with a surprisingly cute main cast. Appropriately they're marketing it as "an orgy of violence wrapped in pink satin". This anime won't be to everyone's taste, and is sure to be used as ammunition for those complaining that anime is all violent. Combined with Gantz, it seems that ADV has recently had a more darker streak than usual.

ICv2 have posted an article about anime sales figures, which have gone up 7.6% using a year over year comparison with Videoscan's figures. This is interesting, mainly because of the saturated anime market and also because Videoscan tracks sales of participating retailers (which is a considerable percentage), these figures are a lot better to go on that individual retailers top ten charts, which never really present data that can be used in metrics.

Our UK readers should be interested to know that the Platinum Edition of Neon Genesis Evangenlion is out on the 21st February. This is more of a friendly reminder really since we've already posted the press release for it. We don't normally post reminder stories however considering how popular Eva is it's bound to generate a lot of interest.
The Platinum edition has remastered video, with sharper colours that really do look more vibrant, a new 5.1 surround sound audio remix which to put it simply sounds great even when down sampled to standard stereo. ADV have also gone to town with the packaging, the DVD case comes in a shiny card sleeve cover features some nice artwork and also a 12 page booklet with sleeve notes on the series. If you haven't already got Evangelion this is the edition you should buy, if you've already got it on DVD and are a big fan you still might want to consider getting this remastered edition.
