YouTube take down nearly 30,000 Japanese Clips

Date: 2006 October 20th Friday [12:36] | Posted By: Joe
Category: > Websites

BBC News and many other news sources are currently reporting that 29,549 clips have been removed from YouTube after the Japanese media companies complained of copyright infringement. The popular video hosting site (recently bought by Google for $1.65bn USD) frequently had clips from Japanese TV shows along with some anime as well.

It is not clear from the article what content has been removed, if it's Japanese TV programmes, more extreme quiz shows, comedy sketches and skits such as Matrix Pong, users of YouTube will have to discover that for themselves. What will be interesting to find out is if YouTube will automatically take down any future content or if the Japan Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers (JASRAC) will have to file more requests.

We're guessing Japanorma will also cover Akihabara, Train Man (Densha Otoko) and if we're lucky a convention like Winter WonderFest.

Date: 2006 August 23rd Wednesday [15:25] | Posted By: Dallas Marshall
Category: > Anime > DVD

The Dragon Quest anime series is all together spread out, lengthy and a very interesting series that has yet to be licensed in America. You would think that a series which involved Akira Toriyama, creator of the insanely popular anime series Dragonball Z, would have his anime adaptation of the already popular ENIX RPG video game (also known as Dragon Warrior in the USA), be released in the USA. But that is beside the point right now. In the planning stages of about five years now, a brand new R2 DVD-Box will soon go on sale in Japan.

Jetix Speak Out About Naruto TV Cuts

Date: 2006 July 28th Friday [9:09] | Posted By: Azure
Category: > Anime

UK viewers will no doubt have noticed that the UK airing of Naruto has been further cut down from the US Toonami cut. There has been much discussion regarding the poor quality of edits, such as the use of static low resolution screen shots or editing out entirely of important shots rather than relying solely on the toned down Toonami edits.

A forum user at Animeuknews.net got the following response after e-mailing Jetix:
"Jetix UK aims to provide exciting and entertaining content for our audience whilst being a responsible kids broadcaster. We therefore must ensure the content of our programmes is suitable for our target audience and we follow strict OFCOM regulations to ensure that these standards are adhered to. Where certain content from the original has been deemed unsuitable for our younger viewers it has been edited from the version which Jetix will be broadcasting. These edits are subtle and we don't believe alter the quality of the viewing experience. If Jetix fans in the UK wish to view the uncut version of Naruto Manga is releasing the DVD of the first 13 episodes, entitled Naruto Unleased, on 21 August. The next 13 episodes will be released on DVD at the end of November."

Category: > Culture

British, Australian and New Zealand readers of Otaku News especially may remember a TV show called Monkey based on Journey to the West a classic tale by Xi You Ji, known as Saiyuki in Japan. Yes, we're talking about the same Monkey famed for his Monkey Magic (Born from an egg on a mountain top, The punkiest Monkey that ever popped), according to the Daily Yomiuri On-line Fuji TV have started to air a new version of Monkey. Ratings are already high and Fuji TV have stated that they've received enquires for this new version of the cult TV show from the UK and Australia. We're pondering how long it will take for a TV studio to rollout a great cheesy dub.

Our UK readers who can view ITV 4 can catch the original Monkey TV show on Thursdays and Fridays at 6pm.

In the mean time we suggest our Brisbane based readers head over to Roma Street Parklands to see Monkey at the theatre! ^_-
