Miyazaki at the Venice Film Festival
Date: Monday September 1st 2008 [8:34] | Posted By: Joe Category: > Anime > Film
BBC News have published an interesting interview with Oscar winning anime director Hayao Miyazaki, focusing on the release of Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea and it's screening at the Venice Film Festival. Oddly they ask about rivialy between Pixar, even though it's well known in fandom that Pixar and Studio Ghibli have strong ties, with John Lasseter and Hayao Miyazaki sharing a great friendship that was even documented on the DVD Thank You, Mr Lasseter.
The article mentions Miyazaki's advancing years, and how he will be over 70 years old when he does his next film.
UK fans will be pleased to hear that the article also mentions Ponyo will get a UK release in April 2009, although it's not clear if this will be a cinematic release or DVD release. Based on our previous experience with Ghibli releases in the UK we're guessing it will have a limited theatrical run first, before a DVD release.

Paprika misses out on Oscars
Date: Tuesday January 23rd 2007 [8:23] | Posted By: Joe Category: > Anime > Film
The nominations for the 2007 Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards have been announced, no anime is running this year. Satoshi Kon's Paprika was on the shortlist of 16 animated features, but failed to be one of the three titles nominated.
Cars, Happy Feet and Monster House have been selected for Best Animated Feature Film of the Year.
Interestingly Paprika may have missed a nomination due to technical difficulties, five Oscar nominations for this category would have been allowed if all 16 films on the shortlist were screened in LA. Arthur and the Invisibles failed to get a screening when required, so the number of Oscar nominations were reduced to three in accordance to the rules.
New Highlander in June
Date: Friday January 19th 2007 [10:53] | Posted By: Jeremy Category: > Anime
The release date for the new Highlander animated film has finally been announced. Manga Entertainment will release Highlander: Vengeance, directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri and animated by Madhouse Studios, on this summer on June 5th. Both regular and special editions are planned for release.
There still remains some speculation as to whether or not the 80 minute film will do well, either with anime or Highlander fans. The franchise's popularity has gone back and forth over the years, but still remains a cult favorite. The new film, which follows the adventures of new Highlander Colin MacLeod in his quest for revenge against the Immortal Marcus Octavius and is said to cover elements not dealt with previously in either the movies or TV series, should still definitely appeal to anime fans, particularly those who favor intense martial arts sword fights along the lines of Ninja Scroll and the recent Basilisk.

Japanese traumatised by Paris
Date: Monday October 23rd 2006 [3:24] | Posted By: Joe Category: > Freaky Things
A syndicated press article reports that around a dozen Japanese tourists each year need psychological treatment after visiting Paris. Apparently the real Paris does not meet their expectations, with unfriendly locals and scruffy streets. Harsh customer service when compared to Japanese shops and everyone looking stern on public transport seem to be key factors.
More bizarrely some people have extreme symptoms of being traumatised in Paris, with individuals believing their hotel room was bugged, another thought that she was being attacked by microwaves, with one man certain he was Louis XIV, this sounds like a plot from a crazy anime series.

"Both the American and the Japanese film-makers treated these books as mines for names and a few concepts, taking bits and pieces out of context, and replacing the story/ies with an entirely different plot, lacking in coherence and consistency"
She also mentions that becuase the Earthsea rights are tied up by the company which made the live action version an American release is not likely until 2009.
