Discotek Media Announce Winter 2023 Licenses

Discotek Media, the US boutique anime label, has announced its upcoming licenses for Winter 2023 as well as updates on their upcoming releases.

Announcing via their official Twitch channel, Discotek Media have announced their new licenses as well as provided updates for titles near release, including their long-awaited release of the 1980's OVA series from GAINAX, Gunbuster. After teasing at the start that they have licensed Kamen Rider Black from 1988, they settled into the bulk of their announcements.

On the anime side of the company, they announced the following titles:

Aim for the Ace! (1973)
Aim for The Ace
Helmed by legendary anime director Ozamu Dezaki, the series tells the story of Hiromi Oka, a high school student who wants to become a professional tennis player as she struggles against mental weakness, anxiety, and thwarted love.

Ultimate Muscle (2002)
Ultimate Muscle
It follows Suguru Kinniku, a superhero who must win a wrestling tournament to retain the title of prince of Planet Kinniku.

Saint Tail (1995)
Saint Tail
Middle school girl Meimi Haneoka transforms into the mysterious thief Saint Tail and steals back random belongings that were stolen using magic tricks. She's assisted by her best friend, classmate, and sister-in-training, Seira Mimori, whose position in the church after school each day allows her to hear the troubles of those who have been wronged and have come to pray to God.

While Saint Tail steals to right the wrongs done to innocent people, she's considered a thief by the police force. Her classmate, Daiki Asuka Jr.-called Asuka Jr.-and son of Detective Asuka, is hot on her trail. Saint Tail delivers notices of her planned capers to Asuka Jr., to give him a fair chance to catch her.

Ghost Stories follows Satsuki Miyanoshita, who moves with her family to the hometown of her deceased mother. On her first day of school, Satsuki, her brother Keiichirou (a first-grader), Hajime Aoyama (their neighbor), Momoko Koigakubo (an older schoolmate), and Leo Kakinoki (a classmate and friend of Hajime's with a penchant for the paranormal) visit the abandoned school building adjacent the current school complex and discover that the building is haunted.
Please note the ADV dub which took massive, although authorised, liberties with the dub script will be included.

The film adapts the Holy Emperor story arc, depicting the conflict between Kenshiro and Thouzer, but introduces a new heroine named Reina, one of Raoh's army officers who falls in love with him.

Mononoke (2007)

Mononoke follows the character of the medicine seller as he continues to face a myriad of supernatural perils. Mononoke takes place between the end of the Edo period and Meiji Era of Japan with the four-class system, Samurai being the highest class and merchants (such as the medicine seller himself) being in the lowest class. Only Samurai were permitted to carry swords, which is why it comes as a shock to many of the characters that the medicine seller would be carrying a sword.

Based on the original Tetsujin 28 series which followed the adventures of Shotaro Kaneda, who controls an enormous robot for the good of mankind. This entry follows Shotaro's son, Masato, who controls a new edition of Tetsujin and works at a detective agency with other children. Among them are Shiori Nishina, granddaughter of Chief Otsuka. The Tetsujin FX (Iron Hero 28 Future X) is controlled by a remote control gun, which has to be aimed at the robot for it to take commands.

Jim Hawkins is a young boy led by progressive events to embark on a search journey for the legendary treasure of the once dreaded pirate, Captain Flint.[3] on their way to Treasure Island, John Silver, Jim's best friend (and eventually father figure), take over command of the ship revealing his true self as the ruthless pirate who was once the right hand of Flint himself. Feeling betrayed, now Jim has to deal with his mixed emotions and face Silver who still considers himself and Jim as friends. Directed by Osamu Dezaki, the director of such classic series as Ashita no Joe, Space Adventure Cobra, The Rose of Versailles, and more.

Sonic X (2003)

On a mission to save his friend, Sonic accidentally sets off a machine that performs Chaos Control, warping him, his friends, and Eggman, to a world of humans. Sonic and Co. find a boy named Chris Thorndyke, who they befriend as they take on Dr. Eggman to collect the 7 Chaos Emeralds, stop the water-creature Chaos, and save the world from the Ultimate Lifeform.

It takes place in 2005, two years after an incident where the first identified extra-terrestrial intelligence classified as EI-01-crash-landed on Earth and absorbed a large number of machines into itself before disappearing without a trace. Following this incident, the Japanese government created a secret organization to combat potential alien threats: the Gutsy Geoid Guard, or "GGG," based beneath G-Island City in Tokyo Bay. Alien lifeforms known as Zonderians have begun to emerge; using Zonder Metal, they can assimilate various kinds of matter to form Zonders, which use humanoid beings as their hosts.



On the live-action side, the company's Nihon Nights label announced three releases, two films, and one TV show.

After a chain of deaths at a junior high school, new transfer student Koichi Sakakibara (Kento Yamazaki) turns to a mysterious girl (Ai Hashimoto) who holds the key to the dark mystery. In the spring of 1998, 15-year-old Koichi Sakakibara's (Kento Yamazaki) father goes abroad and Koichi Sakakibara goes to live with his aunt Reiko Mikami (Ai Kato), who lives in a mountain region. Not long after he moves in with his aunt, he collapses from a pneumothorax attack and becomes hospitalized. One day, at the elevator in the hospital, Koichi meets a pretty girl wearing a uniform and an eye patch. Koichi just stares at her. The pretty girl says something strange and then vanishes in the hospital mortuary. After being discharged from the hospital, Koichi goes to his new school. He finds the pretty girl, Mei Misaki (Ai Hashimoto) is also in his class. Koichi doesn't feel comfortable, because all of his classmates and even his teacher act like the girl doesn't exist.

54 high school girls throw themselves in front of a subway train. This appears to be only the beginning of a string of suicides around the country. Does the new all-girl group Desert have anything to do with it? Detective Kuroda tries to find the answer, which isn't as simple as one could hope.

Kamen Rider Black (1988)

Creation King, the pinnacle of the cult Gorgom. As his life begins to extinguish, the elected Creation King will inherit his power. On the night of their 19th birthday, stepbrothers Kotaro Minami and Nobuhiko Akizuki were kidnapped by Gorgom and submitted to a mutant cyborg surgery to become the candidates for the next Gorgom Creation King. Both of them are called Century Kings and are destined to best each other in a final battle - whoever wins will become the next Creation King. Kotaro escaped before getting brainwashed (which is the final step in the surgery), with help from his foster father, and turned against Gorgom. He soon finds out the horrific truth from his stepfather: Gorgom originally killed his true parents and, since both Kotaro and Nobuhiko were born on the day of a solar eclipse, are referred to as "Black Sun" and "Shadow Moon". Kotaro, taking on the name of Kamen Rider Black, was determined to rescue his stepbrother from Gorgom while protecting Japan.

Lastly, Discotek announced their upcoming release of Gunbuster will feature commentary tracks from Dr. Jonathan Clements (co-author of the Anime Encyclopedia), the English dub they've commissioned from Sound Cadence Studio will be in 5.1 surround sound (and will also include the science lesson omake in English as well), and will give an option on episodes 4 & 6 to view in either the original letterboxed aspect ratio or a newly created 16:9 aspect ratio (which will omit the black bars on the top, bottom, and sides of the screen). They've also promised that there are more extras
