Space Dandy's Kimiko Ueno to be Anime Guest of Honour at Manchester Comic Con

Space Dandy scriptwriter Kimiko Ueno is to be MCM Manchester Comic Con's first ever Anime Guest of Honour, show organisers have announced. As well as meeting fans and signing autographs on both days of the 25-26 July festival of pop culture, Kimiko Ueno will be presenting an on-stage panel on how anime screenplays are developed.

Born in Japan's Kanagawa prefecture, Kimiko Ueno made her anime debut in 2009 as a scriptwriter for children's comedy show Gokyoudai Monogatari, going on to write for numerous other children's anime series including Stitch!: Zutto Saiko no Tomodachi, Kuromajyo-san ga Toru and long-running kids' favourite Crayon Shin-chan. She also wrote the screenplay for the feature length Crayon Shin-chan: Very Tasty! B-class Gourmet Survival!!, which received a theatrical release across Japan back in 2013.

However, western anime fans will know Kimiko Ueno best for her work on Shinichiro Watanabe's hit sci-fi anthology series Space Dandy, currently available online from Netflix and on home video from Anime Limited. The show's first season features no fewer than eight episodes penned by Ueno - more than any other scriptwriter. Her contributions include the much-talked-about zombie and rock 'n' roll episodes, 'Sometimes You Can't Live With Dying, Baby' and 'Rock 'n' Roll Dandy'.
