Full Story

Central Park Media announced on their website that they will be releasing the science fiction comedy Outlanders on DVD next February. The new re-mastered and re-dubbed DVD will the 20th anniversary edition of the classic OAV, first released in Japan in 1986 and later in America during the beginning of the anime craze back in the early 1990's.

The Outlanders OAV is based on the manga by Johji Manabe (translated and published in America by Dark Horse Comics' Studio Proteus manga imprint). In it, Earth is invaded by the Santovasku Empire, who view our world as a sacred object and see the presence of humans as an intrusion. The attack comes to a halt, however, when the lovely (and scantily clad) Princess Kahm sees hapless photojournalist Tetsuya and decides to take him as her husband. This doesn’t sit well with Kahm’s father, though, who uses his power as the Emperor to try and come between the young lovers. The credits of the 48-minute OAV’s creative team include such classics as Record of Lodoss War, Kimagure Orange Road, Sailor Moon and Macross.

The new 20th anniversary DVD contains a slew of extras. In addition to being digitally remastered and sporting a brand new English dub (whose cast was chosen by anime fans), there are also previews, an Outlander trailer, and featurette of interviews of the fans who cast the new dub. It will be released on February 7, 2006, with a suggested retail price of $19.95.
