Curated by anime expert Helen McCarthy she’s really managed to arrange an interesting line up. Apart from all the great Gonzo titles what’s really got our interest is the Surprise Sneak Peak, scheduled for Thursday 9th April.

Otaku couples in London looking for something to do this Valentine's Day (on Saturday February 14th 2009), might want to head over to Orbital Manga. From 2pm they'll have some UK artists drawing cute portraits of you and other half for a fee. They also say don't worry if you're single, as they'll get the artists to draw you with your favourite manga character.

Our question is what if you're not single and you want to be drawn with your favourite character? Well this might make you single afterwards! I guess it depends on what/who you get them to draw.

They'll also be running an art contest as a chance to win prizes.

Japanese Toilet Exhibition

Fans of Japanese plumbing in Tokyo, will want to go to Toire Hakubutsukan Exhibition as reported by The Japan Times. Highlights include the toilets used by sumo wrestlers, which apparently 5 cm wider and 7 cm longer than the regular Japanese toilet bowl.

Other famous toilets include the "throne" of feudal lord Takeda Shingen. The article claims the a quarter-size model of the field toilet was used by as he "mulled strategies during the Warring States Period (1467-1568)".

Admission is free, Tokyo show ends Jan. 27, moves to Kasugai, Aichi Prefecture Feb. 5-9. 2009 Toto Tachikawa Showroom is near Izumi Taiikukan Station on the Tama Toshi Monorail Line. Call 042-537-1010 for further details.

London anime fans will want to head over to the Barbican for their upcoming season Japanimation: After Tezuka. It's considers Tezuka's legacy and the works he inspired.

It starts on Wednesday 28th January 2009 and is set to run to Sunday 1st February. Curated by anime expert Helen McCarthy, she always manages to arrange a selection of animated treats. Her introductions are worth attending too, as she manages to cram plenty of facts about each screening.

London anime fans are a in for a real treat on Saturday 31st January 2009, where a special Tokyo Day will be running. Organised by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Tokyo Day is set to be packed with tons for otaku to see and do.

The event will be held at Lawrence Hall at the Royal Horticultural Halls and Conference Centre.

Admission is free. It's set to run from 10am to 8pm.

We don't normally plug stuff like this on Otaku News, but the press release itself is a great example of Anglo-Japan cross cultural collaboration, which we always like hear and shout about. Vegetarians who are up for a Christmas holiday get away might want to pay a visit to Fosse Farmhouse in North Wiltshire in the UK.

Not only are they a good UK tourist attraction, they got close ties with Japan, and will be offering from Saturday 20th December 2008 to Sunday 4th January 2009 a special Mominoki vegetarian dinner menu. So if you want to eat like Paul McCartney and his band over Christmas then pay them a visit.

The event is organised by Akemi Solloway, and will be at the Richmond Adult Community College. It's set to have art, cultural activities and fun, including a Manga and Anime Art Exhibition.

We've got some exciting news for cosplayers in who can get to London this weekend. I'm sure you already know about the Grand International Cosplay Ball on Sunday 30th November 2008, which has an interesting line up of guests including Electro Pop Idol Hiko Suzuki.

On Saturday 29th November 2008 at selection of great cosplayer guests will be making an appearance at TokyoToys in the Trocadero, Picadilly Circus. Yaya Han, Laura Sindall, Jacob Kimber, Kahman Fong, Isabelle Jeudy, Damien Ratte and Brian Boling will all be there, giving talks and interviews. There will also be a prize draw thanks to the great people at KOEI Entertainment.

Last London Anime Club Meeting

Anime fans who can get to London on Sunday 7th December 2008 should do so for the last meeting of the London Anime Club. The LAC has been running for 15 years now, but attendance has been dropping for various reasons, so they've decided to halt it's regular meetings. The Christmas meetings always have lots of people going, along with extras such as a prize draw, DDR:UK will be there with games and the bring and buy, along with all the usual things like the video room, and dealers selling anime and manga merchandise.

Kitacon Announces New Guests

Gaming Cosplay World Record set in London

Following on from our earlier article about the Gaming Cosplay World Record we can confirm that they did break the record on Saturday 25th October 2008, for the largest gathering of people dressed up as video games characters. A total of 342 people were dressed as characters from games, narrowly beating the record set only last week in Germany with 337 people. These figures were verified by Guinness World Records.

Disappointingly the number for the London record could have been bigger, but some people were disqualified for dressing as characters that weren't primarily video games characters (we did warn about this), such as Lego Batman, or Indiana Jones. The question is how long will this record be held?

Japanese Cars at the Science Museum in London

Fans of design, cars, science or just cool Japanese stuff in general will want to pay a visit to the Japan Car exhibition at the Science Museum in London, from 29th November 2008 until 19th April 2009.

The exhibition is set to focus on size, environment and "moving urban cells". It will also display cars along other elements of Japanese culture, including bonsai, art and design.

A keen eyed Otaku News reader has sent us details of a world record attempt, for the largest gathering of people dressed up as video game characters, which will occur on Satury 25 October 2008 at the London ExCel centre for the London MCM Expo.

Cosplayers should note that the characters have to been in video games before other media.
Eg: Sonic the Hedgehog started out in a video game, so he's fine to cosplay as.
Batman however started out in a comic book, so he does not count.

No, unfortunately not a cruel April Fools joke, David "Dragon" Cotterill has announced that there will be no further regular meetings of the London Anime Club. Although rumours of quarterly or possible anniversary meeting abound, nothing concrete has been set and there are no entries in the event schedule after the meeting on December 7th, which can probably be considered the last one.

This is the first event to our knowledge that is aimed at cosplayers, and not an event like an anime convention with cosplayers as a feature.

The event looks to be a sure fire hit, with live bands, DJs, ballroom dancing, a kimono fashion show, fire and burlesque performances and even an Alice-In-Wonderland themed photography area.

Totoro Forest Project

Fans of Studio Ghibli and those concerned with conservation will be interested to hear about the project to save Sayama Forest, which is also known as Totoro Forest. The project aims to auction off original artwork and sell a book with the collected art, in order to raise money to protect Sayama Forest.

"A fund-raising exhibition / auction to benefit the Totoro No Furusato National Fund, the Japanese non-profit foundation established by Oscar-winning filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, which is leading efforts to preserve and protect the Sayama Forest. The auction will feature original art created by internationally-acclaimed artists in the fields of animation, comic books, and illustration."

Fans will have to travel to Pixar Animation Studio in Emeryville, California.

We've received some interesting details about a very special Kami-shibai showing in the UK. The paper theatre performances from Japan used to entertain children in an age before television. This is form of story telling had a direct influence on the evolution of manga.

Back from AmeCon 2008

I've just got back from AmeCon. Some of the the other Otaku News Crew are still there, having a great time.

We've got a few juicy bits of information that will make some excellent articles once we type them up.

Spike's just sent us details directly from the closing ceremony. Apparently, there won't be an AmeCon next year (2009), there'll be an AyaCon instead, with AmeCon taking a break for a year, while they plan to return for 2010.

To summarise, it was an enjoyable and successful convention to say the least, with lots of work put in by various members of the anime community. With artists supplying artwork, tons of fans in cosplay, plenty of fans volunteering to run panels and others helping out as gophers. Also don't forget dealers supplying eager otaku with goods (yay for merchandise), and a well organised convention committee putting in a lot of effort in behind the scenes making sure everything runs smoothly.

London Manga and Anime Art Exhibition

We've got some details from an Otaku News reader about Manga and Anime Art Exhibition in London, which will run from August to November 2008. The exhibition will be held at at Westminster Reference Library and St John's Wood Library. It's a great opportunity to exhibit work by new an established artists. Highlights include talks by Akemi Solloway on How Manga and Anime's costume is connected with Japanese traditional Culture, plus traditional Japanese dancing, music, and origami.

British Theme for Fuji Rock Festival 2008

BBC News have an interesting article about this years Fuji Rock Festival, which has a British theme, to celebrate 150 years of diplomatic relations between the UK and Japan.

With Union Flags flying everywhere, the article states that many are wearing British themed outfits.
"British acts including The Courteeners, Hard-Fi, Primal Scream and headliners Underworld shared the main stage with Japanese performers on Saturday."

The article also highlights that the Fuji Rock Festival was inspired by Glastonbury.
"We call it the Fuji experience. It is like Glastonbury, but has been perfected in that Japanese way," says the festival's international organiser, Johnnie Fingers (also known as the founding member of The Boomtown Rats).

AmeCon 2008 Competition

With Leicester based UK anime convention AmeCon less than a month a way, they've decided to launch a great competition where you can win two tickets to the convention, plus free accommodation for the length of the convention.

The press release also details the guest for this year will be voice actress Kari Walgren, who has done a large variety of voice work, including the American dubs for a few anime series - Haruko in FLCL, Scarlett in Steamboy, Robin in Witch Hunter Robin and Lavie in Last Exile.

The season is curated by anime expert Helen McCarthy (who's written tons of good books and articles on anime and manga). The line is up a great showcase of Tezuka's work, with The Film Is Alive: Osamu Tezuka Filmography looking especially interesting, as it we're certain Helen will bring an informative take on the panel with the event.

King's College London Japan's Manga and Anime Industries seminar

Readers who can get into London on Friday 16th of May 2008 will want to get to King's College London, from 1pm to 6pm to attend a seminar on Japanese comic book and animation industries.

The line up of speakers looks good, but Yoko Ono is not THAT Yoko Ono. It'll be interesting if they mention the difference between manga and manga style artwork in the talks too.

The artistic folks at Terratag have sent us details of their artwork which will be displayed at the Urban Art Show in The Old Cinema from the 2nd to 15th May 2008.

Terratag will be showing 4 large hand-painted canvases and 4 silk screen printed A2 art prints.
