Nurse Witch Komugi: 2-Disk Collection

Summary

Komugi Nakahara is a cosplay idol, so how could she resist an offer from Mugimaru, an agent from Vaccine World to become a magical girl and save the world from invading Viruses? Well she couldn't, and now a star that has the slight encumbrances of being flat-chested, child-like, and a few balls short of a pool table has to fight off some of the most ridiculous enemies ever to invade the anime world. Unbeknownst to her however, Magical Maid Koyori, has sided with the viruses and is helping them and their leader Ungrar in the conquest of Earth. Follow Komugi as she battles ASCII art characters, Internet culture and even a giant transforming Tokyo Big Sight in the pursuit of the evil Viruses!

Review

From the start there is a sense of humour about this series, thought don't be fooled, this is not in the same vein as titles such as Excel Saga, Puni Puni Poemy or FLCL, there is no hint of the frenetic energy or quick-fire style that these series exhibit. This rather follows in the same style as Otaku no Video or Lucky Star as in it takes measured side-swipes at it's targets rather than taking them head on. For those not in the know, Nurse Witch Komugi is a light-hearted OVA based on the series SoulTaker and many of the characters from the original series reappear either as major characters or in cameo appearances.

Nurse Witch Komugi: 2-Disk Collection

Komugi herself is a ditzy, forgetful idol star who seems to defeat her foes more by luck and energy rather than any kind of forethought or plan, and spends most of the series being chastised by her manager Shiro Mibu or her company director Yui Kirihara. Koyori Kokibunji, her best friend, is a well endowed fellow star with a huge following and a dark secret and what you could call a split personality. Both her manager and director have fierce temperaments though try to do the best for their talent, and an assortment of colleagues provide foils for Komugi in what can only be described as repetitive idol or boob gags.

This 5 episode series is of course an OVA and therefore the sound and visuals should be taken with a pinch of salt. That said, ADV have gone to the lengths of getting the original SoulTaker cast to dub over the respective parts into this new OVA, even though they don't hold the rights to the original series. The disk comes with English 5.1 and Japanese 2.1 soundtracks as well as the usual documentaries and commentaries, and as usual the sub and dub versions are virtually indistinguishable.

Nurse Witch Komugi: 2-Disk Collection

All in all Nurse Witch Komugi is not so much a laugh riot, but more of a deceptively clever slight at otaku culture. With that, if you watch this series with preconceptions of either a serious or hyper-comedic anime, you will probably be disappointed. However if you keep an open mind and put your brain into neutral and enjoy it for what it is, then a lot of mileage can be gained from this. Frankly this anime is worth buying purely for the Big Sight transformation sequence alone, SoulTaker fans will love the thorough embuggering that the cast get in a silly magical girl context, and non-fans should enjoy the otaku culture references. I can recommend this series and say that it was worth every penny I paid for it.
