Planzet

Summary

In 2053, whats left of the Japanese military finally put their master plan, to destroy an invading alien life form, into action. Welcome to the world of Planzet.

Review

Made in 2010, Planzet is a CGI sci-fi film. In the opening we a shown a flash back scene, complete with sepia effect and film scratches, informing us that Mars has been made habitual and people are being given the chance to move there if they pass a screening process. We then see a younger version of the main character Akeshima Taishi and his last moments with his father, who will be killed in the attack by the mysterious aliens (named FOS). The story then goes back to 2053, where Taishi has joined the military to get revenge for his father. Taishi is in a small specialist unit that fights using mechs called Geometric Limbs. In a mission to destroy the FOS, the military has decided to convert the Diffusor, normally used as a shield around Earth that stops the FOS invading, into a weapon capable of destroying the main FOS fortress. Taishi's unit comes into play as this conversion will take 14 minutes and the base needs to be protected.

At a brief 50 minutes length, Planzet has a lot to pack in with setting up the universe and the characters. Which it does quiet well with its brisk pace, though it doesn't offer much in character development. The CGI is perfectly fine but lacks the polish of some of a Hollywood film or the stylishness of the recent Appleseed movies. The biggest misstep is the last section of the film. The majority is serious then it starts doing things the cast of Gurren Lagann would be proud of. It doesn't ruin the film but does leave you a bit surprised.
