Summary

Ponta the dog can transform into a girl with the aid of the Guru Guru bone, she even has a human boyfriend; Mirai who accepts her as she is.In this volume Ponta is utterly lost, and all she can think about is the fact that she’ll never see Mirai again. Mirai searches for her desperately, whilst his ex-girlfriend Hana takes the opportunity to make her moves. Ponta’s feelings for Mirai are so strong she feels her spirit leave her body and travel to him. Everything depends on Ponta getting her message across to Mirai that she’s still alive.

Review

Volume five opens with Ponta lost and seriously hurt, and her mind is still only on one thing Mirai. Ponta’s typically single minded approach causes her spirit to leave her body, she desperately tries to get Mirai to notice her not seeming to understand she can’t. The second story picks up on the slightly weird side effects of being dog/girl, as Ponta breaks into heat –in human form.

Despite a few adult overtones when Ponta is in heat, Guru Guru Pon-chan is tooth rottingly sweet. Guru and Ponta’s relationship on the surface seems utterly innocent. Ponta adores Mirai with the same single mindedness of a beloved pet, whilst Mirai can’t help but want to reciprocate.

The more of Ikezawa’s manga I read, the more it grows on me. The way she draws make the worlds she creates really interesting. After a few pages it doesn’t matter if deep down the story is a bit shallow. Guru Guru Pon chan is less about deep philosophical insights, more about shoujo manga to relax with at the end of a tough day.
