Mamotte! Lollipop

Summary

The magic exam is nearly over, which will mean there’s no reason for Zero and Ichi to stay with Nina. With the end so near, Nina, Zero and Ichi have to face a mass of magical users all of whom are determined to pass .

Review

This volume of Mamotte Lollipop! Is a big turning point for story as the magical exam is almost at an end. The potion to remove the magical pearl from Nina’s body is almost ready. This means she faces a big choice. If she doesn’t take the potion she has to take the risk of keeping the pearl inside her body, but she can stay with Zero and Ichi, If Nina takes the potion Zero and Ichi can pass the exam, and they can all stay out of danger.

To be blatantly honest it didn’t seem like the magical exam would ever really end, so this volume was a pleasant surprise . There’s a good deal of magical fighting this volume, but whilst some of the special moves are interesting there’s no real danger to the fights. A good pep talk from Nina seems to pull Zero and Ichi out of even the most dangerous fights. It would have been far more interesting if for once Zero and Ichi had to use their brains to get out of trouble, rather than a sudden realisation they have to try harder.

As well as the main story there’s also a short flash back about Rokka and how she met Ichi. It actually does a good job of explaining Rokka’s obsession with him, and why she disturbingly transforms herself into an adult . Consistently throughout Mamotte Lillipop! It’s been the shorts that have been the real gems, and which frustratingly show that if the main manga was more tightly plotted it could be something really special.

Despite, it’s short coming on action sequences what Mamotte Lollipop! is all about is liking someone, and doing your best to help that person. There are no deep emo pits of disappear just the challenge of figuring out who it is you really like and then deciding what if anything to do about it.
