Tomcats

Summary

Mao is a young man on mysterious voyage that takes him into the midst of a wild wonderland. In a sprawling desert land where he takes his refuge, his daily life becomes beset with magical mischief as a whole host of crazy cat folk appear.

With wandering gods, "Men in Black" and cat folk great and small, what lies instore for Mao and company is as unreal and unlikely as the magical tree that contains a porthole to another dimension...
Finding some solace in the stoic serenity of his mute lover Tora, Mao is forced into the flow of this situation comedy where anything goes.

Review

In a manga all about boys in love and crammed with cat people, a feline loving fujoshi (such as myself) can't go far wrong... right? Tomcats, however, is a mauled mess of a manga that barely hangs together as narrative. The magical world setting is woefully void of enchantment or reader engagement.

Masashiro Minamino's random portrayals of cat people of varying sizes and ages are not cute or even particularly catlike! The creepy cast of nekomimi munchkins are flanked by some feckless guys that are in love, apparently.

I had to claw my way through the first volume that dragged itself through in a frustratingly unfunny fashion. When even the characters begin to bemoan the storytelling, I was gritting my teeth and flexing my claws ready to turn feral.

The unappealing designs and shambolic use of surrealism create a catastrophic caterwaul of a comedy that I would deem fit for little more than kitty litter.
