UK Anime fans who can get to Manchester from 3rd July to 20th September 2008 are in for a treat as Urbis will be showing 31 films over 36 days as part of their new exhibition - How Manga Took Over the World.

Highlights include:

Princess Mononoke
Howl's Moving Castle
Millennium Actress

Schedule of Manga films announced as part of Urbis' new exhibition 'How Manga Took Over the World'

Film Schedule July 3 - September 20 2008

Directed by 'Akira' director Katsuhiro Otomo, 'Steamboy', features a Victorian Manchester in full Manga glory, just one of the 31 films being shown over 36 days as part of Urbis' new exhibition, 'How Manga Took Over the World'.

In July Urbis launches a new late night opening season. Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from July to September will see special evening screenings of Manga, or Manga inspired, films. They range from Manga classics such as the landmark 'Akira' and 'Ghost in the Shell' with its cyber cops, to live action features like the groundbreaking 'The Matrix' and 2004 Cannes Grand Prix Jury Prize winner, 'Oldboy'. For added authenticity the films will be screened in a Japanese style cinema with traditionally inspired floor cushions.

Manga movies for kids will show every Thursday in August. Studio Ghibli films will feature heavily: 'Princess Mononoke', 'Kiki's Delivery Service', 'Laputa', 'Howl's Moving Castle' and Oscar winner 'Spirited Away' will be in the schedule.

Between 10am - 6pm every day throughout the exhibition, trailers and episodes from seminal Anime television programmes such as 'Astroboy', 'Natuto Unleashed' and 'Tetsujin 28' will show how Manga has infiltrated the small screen.

'How Manga Took Over the World' explores the global phenomenon of Manga. Its influence in shaping contemporary culture is given a new perspective in this first exhibition of its kind at Urbis. The work of leading Manga artists and other manifestations of Manga reaching onto the high street will be on display, alongside Manga influences in graphic design, toys, and make-up as well as in fashion and music.

All film screenings are free. They run from 6-8pm, unless otherwise stated, and there is no need to book, although visitors are advised to arrive early for this first come, first served arrangement.
