Jormungand Season 1

Summary

New series follows a young arms dealer and her body guards as they travel around the globe attempting to avoid the law, as they carry on with their illegal weapon trade.

Review

This news series out 21st July follows Koko Hekmatyar, a young arms dealer who sells weapons under an international shipping corporation, Jormungand. As one of the company's unofficial weapon dealers, she secretly sells weapons around the world while avoiding the law in addition to an array of colourful assassins and ex clients/fellow arms dealers along the way. Most of which she has an equally colourful history with, the banter between the characters is good, it is fun to be introduced to new characters regularly all with a different story to tell on Koko. Traveling with her is her team of burly bodyguards, some of these could do with a bit of character development, but I guess they are just there for the muscle.

Jormungand Season 1

The series kicks off with a car chase in Eastern Europe, with the usual array of automated weapons and explosives etc. Unusually for an arms dealer she travels with a girl who’s weapon of choice is a samurai sword that sports an eye patch and seems to have an undeniable crush on our charismatic leader Koko. With her wild mood swings and high-octane emotion, a personality large enough to match the weapons she deals in, it's easy to see why.

Jormungand Season 1

Jonah is the narrator and the most resent recruit of Koko’s. A boy solider, who interestingly hates arms dealers, he remains a quiet mystery happy to be bossed around by Koko and the other much larger and older members of the arms team. Jonah in my opinion quite clearly could do with a hug, as with many anime you are left wondering how someone so young has got mixed up in all this bother. Jonah has a troubled past and generally keeps to himself, a likeable protagonist and I'm sure his motives of joining the team (despite his hatred for all arms dealers and guns) and more of his history will become apparent as the story develops.

Jormungand Season 1

It is well animated and has an unusually Neutral colour palate that actually really works against the gunfire, explosions and blood splatters that are a regular occurrence. It is a modern, high-octane ride, with intriguing characters that develop throughout the series, and aptly current themes that it doesn’t heavily sit on, but alludes to human responsibility and the arms race that is ever on going between the nations of the world. All in all I found it enjoyable, but with the amount of new animated series available to watch I’m not sure I would pick this above some of the others, I like Jonah, but do I love him? Do I really care what happens to him? That I am not sure of, but there is definitely potential here, to develop the characters and the story into something really great.

As a side note the sound track is crazy (in a good way) and goes from rock to dance to classical to country episode to episode without a second glance.
