Japanese cinema fans who can get to London this month (July 2007), to catch the classic films of Mikio Naruse, which will be screened for a season at the BFI Southbank.

In Japan, Mikio Naruse (1905-69) is regarded as a cinematic master, to rank alongside Kurosawa, Mizoguchi and Ozu. In the UK, his work is largely unknown, which makes this season of his very greatest films all the more exciting and valuable.

The BFI have been promoting screenings for When A Woman Ascends the Stairs, so we suggest you catch if it you only have a chance to catch one movie.
