The good folks from GKIDS have sent us details of their up coming Studio Ghibli Release Arrietty. It's the studio's adaptation of Mary Norton's The Borrowers, which has been adapted in various other formats over the years. This version of the childhood classic has the little people living under the floorboards of a house in rural Japan.
Arrietty will sneak into cinemas for IMAX previews on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th October 2026 and then in other cinemas from Friday 16th October 2026. It'll be available both in Japanese with English subtitles and dubbed into English. There are two versions of the dub of this film. The US English Dub and the British English dub. The UK and Ireland screenings will use the British English dub featuring the vocal talents of Saoirse Ronan, Olivia Colman and a young Tom Holland before he became Spider-Man.
As with all Ghibli movies, it looks absolutely stunning and the attention to detail in Arrietty is something worth catching on the big screen. We think there's something ironic about watching a movie about little people on a enormous IMAX screen!
Tickets are on sale now, visit the GKIDS website to find a screening near you.
If you're in the UK or Ireland you can watch the Studio Ghibli catalogue on Netflix too.

NEW YORK/LONDON (10 September, 2026) - Get ready to experience a small world on the biggest screen yet. From the globally celebrated Studio Ghibli, ARRIETTY comes to IMAX® for the very first time in the UK and Ireland, newly remastered in 4K, from Wednesday 14th October 2026. The film will also be released wide in cinemas from Friday 16th October.
ARRIETTY will release in IMAX and cinemas both in the original Japanese with English subtitles, and the 2011 English dub produced in the UK that features the first feature film performance of Tom Holland. The cast features British and Irish icons including Saoirse Ronan, Tom Holland, Olivia Colman, Geraldine McEwan, and Mark Strong.
ARRIETTY is a gorgeous and adventure-filled adaptation of Mary Norton's "The Borrowers," one of the most beloved children's books of all time, directed by Academy Award®-nominee Hiromasa Yonebayashi based on a screenplay by Hayao Miyazaki, who also worked on project planning for the film, and Keiko Niwa.
The release continues GKIDS' celebration of Studio Ghibli's timeless works, with Yoshifumi Kondo's Whisper of the Heart releasing in cinemas from Friday 18th September, and IMAX previews from Wednesday 16th September. Like GKIDS and IMAX's partnership in North America, fans can look forward to additional IMAX releases of new Studio Ghibli 4K Remasters, plus the re-release of the entire library across all home video platforms.
The release follows the recent announcement that GKIDS has acquired, through Goodfellas, the UK and Ireland distribution rights to the 23 film-library of Japan's renowned Studio Ghibli, one of the most acclaimed and influential animation studios in the world. In the UK and Ireland, GKIDS will be working in close partnership with sister-company and longtime collaborator Anime Limited, the Glasgow-based distributor, which was recently acquired by GKIDS' parent company Toho Global.
Synopsis:
In a secret world hidden beneath the floorboards, tiny people called Borrowers live out of sight of humans. But when brave Arrietty is out gathering supplies, she is discovered by Sho, a human boy, and they begin to form a friendship that blossoms into a heart warming adventure.
