Review

The Revenge of My Youth: Re Life With an Angelic Girl Manga is the latest offering from One Peace Books. Based on the light novel, it tells the story of a corporate wage slave Niihama. Our protagonist is forced to work long hours and rarely given a day off, even at weekends. He works in a company with a truly toxic culture. Eventually when he collapses from overwork Niihama awakens, not in the afterlife or some distant isekai world, but in his family home as his teenage self. This genre has been done many times, with titles like Erased, Tokyo Revengers and many more springing to mind. Like these titles, there's the death of the young love interest at hand.

His classmate, Shijoin, is young and attractive. She makes the other insecure girls jealous, which motivates them to bully her. In the long run this causes depression and other forms of misery for Shijoin and eventually results in her committing suicide as an adult as the cycle continues.

So Niihama sets out to fix the errors of his past, but with a significantly better understanding of how the world works and what to do. And this is where the time jump / do over your life genre is often weak, this title really does lean well into his experience as an adult. Our hero actually takes time to study as he doesn't want to end back at his toxic company. He's determined to get better prospects and save the day. We're shown him dealing with teenage troubles, but solving the problems effectively and then it's explained how his experience working at his shady employer meant his dealt with something similar before.

The art is drawn to a high standard. It is particularly character driven with lots of panels of the characters close up. Panel and composition wise it feels pretty conventional (which isn't a bad thing). It's not ground breaking, but then again everything doesn't have to be. There are a few special pages which are delightful too.

Revenge of My Youth Volume 1, The: Re Life with an Angelic Girl

The Revenge of My Youth: Re Life With an Angelic Girl Manga gives Niihama some decent character development. His motivation is clear and his thought process is explained to the reader. He idolises Shijoin, but that makes sense because she is his teenage crush.

When I first heard of The Revenge of My Youth: Re Life With an Angelic Girl, I had set my expectations fairly low because it seemed like a pretty standard and formulaic affair. However it won me over. There is a layer of intelligence in the story telling and the main character has depth. It is a rewarding read and I'm eager to see what direction the manga will take us.
