With the 30+ students in Negi's class (including fortune teller Konoka, shy bookworm Nodoka, haughty rich girl Ayaka, half-demon kendoist Setsuna, vampire girl Evangeline, ninja girl Kaede and many more) and Akamatsu’s plans to develop them all with their own storylines, Negima could very contain one the largest voice casts for an anime series, Japanese or English.

Howl's Moving Castle Set For March 2006 DVD Release

Date: 2005 December 05 16:54 | Posted By:

Category > Anime > DVD

UK on-line retailer's Play.com and Amazon.co.uk have started to take pre-orders for Howl's Moving Castle, they both listing the release date as 13th March 2006. Otaku News had heard rumours about Optimum wanting to release Howl earlier, however in order to qualify for an Academy Award, they had to delay the release. What's interesting to note that the boxshots from Amazon and Play are different, which leads us to believe that both sites have produced mock-ups as they are missing vital details on the packaging such as the BBFC rating logo.

A quick check on Amazon.com reveals that they're taking pre-orders for two different versions of Howl's Moving Castle, which are priced the same, we suspect that Amazon will remove one edition nearer the launch date.

If Optimum and Buena Vista can release Howl's Moving Castle in March, they should be highly commended, since the Japanese DVD has just been released this November and Ghibli titles have been traditonally very slow to get US and UK DVD releases.

ADV Films Acquires Samurai Gun

Date: 2005 May 17 17:33 | Posted By:

Category > Anime > DVD

Those nice people at ADV Films have just sent us the details of a new title they've acquired - Samurai Gun, it looks like a interesting mix of Samurai and firearms. It doesn't seem to be for the faint hearted, since their marketing it as "Rurouni Kenshin With A Better Body Count", well Kenshin, was never keen on killing in his later years, since he did use a reverse blade sword after vowing never to kill again, but I digress, it looks like an interesting title and perhaps on to consider. Otaku News Adds DVD Reviews

Date: 2005 May 08 18:45 | Posted By:

Category > Websites

Here at Otaku News we listen to you, our readers comments and will always try to improve the site based on what we hear. The most common request we've had so far is for a review section. So the Otaku News Crew started to work away, writing reviews and also writing the code for you to navigate the reviews. At the moment we've put up some DVD reviews for you to read, over time we intend to add a lot more. Currently all editions of Otaku News will show all DVDs, regardless of their region. Eventually once we have a substantial number of reviews the UK and US Editions will only display reviews from their region.

We've also adopted a policy of being honest, so far one review already has a rating of 2 out of 10! We hope you find this addition to the site helpful and enjoying reading our opinions, of course if you don't like it and think you can do better, then by all means tell us, we are always looking for talented contributors to write news articles, reviews and anything else of interest to otaku!

Elfen Lied Thrills, Mortifies May 17

Date: 2005 April 18 18:24 | Posted By:

Category > Anime > DVD

The gentle softly spoken people over at ADV Films have sent us the details of their latest DVD release - Elfen Lied, a violent, gruesome anime, with a surprisingly cute main cast. Appropriately they're marketing it as "an orgy of violence wrapped in pink satin". This anime won't be to everyone's taste, and is sure to be used as ammunition for those complaining that anime is all violent. Combined with Gantz, it seems that ADV has recently had a more darker streak than usual.

Anime Sales Up In The US

Date: 2005 March 29 17:16 | Posted By:

Category > Anime > DVD

ICv2 have posted an article about anime sales figures, which have gone up 7.6% using a year over year comparison with Videoscan's figures. This is interesting, mainly because of the saturated anime market and also because Videoscan tracks sales of participating retailers (which is a considerable percentage), these figures are a lot better to go on that individual retailers top ten charts, which never really present data that can be used in metrics.

ADV Films Announces February 8 Release of Gantz: Game of Death, Volume One

Date: 2005 January 07 19:03 | Posted By:

Category > Anime > DVD

ADV Films have sent us details about their new US DVD release, the dark and cutting edge Gantz. ADV pride themselves on showing the uncut version of the show, not seen on Japanese television. If you're used to cute anime, this may not be the best title for you, if you like something at the more violent end of the spectrum, then go for Gantz! However readers should not confuse Gantz with a mindless violence anime show (*cough* we'll mention no names here), it actually tackles some issues in a thought provoking manner, the two main characters are actually killed in the first episode (and that's not a spoiler either). Gantz also has a very strong helping of fan service!

The Gantz Volume 1 DVD only has two episodes on it (we believe to licensing difficulties), however the price has been lowered to reflect that.
