Texhnolyze: Volume 1: Inhumane & Beautiful

Summary

Hidden deep underground lies the city of Lukuss, an enormous experimental metropolis ruled by blood-thirsty gangs constantly battling for supremacy, a violent place filled with a deep -rooted sense of hopelessness and despair. In this place, to show your strength and to punish your enemies, you must deprive them of their limbs, preventing them from taking retribution. However for a select few, this is not the end, for an incredible technology exists called Texhnolyze that allows human limbs to be replaced with advanced cybernetic replacements. For a price.

Review

Within this world we find Ichise, a prize fighter who stepped out of line and now finds himself facing the wrath of his employers, Ran, a young girl who can see possible futures, Onishi, the leader of one of the gangs who struggles to maintain his control over the city, and Yoshii, a strange visitor from the surface world who's motives are unclear. The series was created by the same big names that were involved with 'Serial Experiments Lain' and 'Haibane Renmei', and elements of both can be seen in Texhnolyze.

Texhnolyze: Volume 1: Inhumane & Beautiful

Flashbacks are handled in short quiet bursts covered in static like a bad VHS recording, and serve to inform the viewer of certain facts in a non-linear fashion. Those of you that have seen lain, will not be surprised as to the pace of the show, it is incredibly slow, much slower even than Lain. Graphically, Texhnolyze is beautiful, with a small amount of CG supporting a stunning, washed out pastel palate that only heightens the feeling of hopelessness within the series; however the audio, while good, is only presented in 2.0 stereo, while most series of this calibre have a surround sound option in DTS or 5.1 surround at the least.

Texhnolyze: Volume 1: Inhumane & Beautiful

That aside Texhnolyze is a great series for those of you who like the sensation of 'peeling an onion' to reveal the core truths behind the storyline, but the pace at which it runs may put many viewers off. As someone who has seen the first half of the series already, I can only urge viewers to persevere, as the contents of the first disk only really serves to introduce the characters and set the scene for later episodes. All in all a great series for those of you with the patients of a saint, and one to be missed at your own loss.
